German Whispers Sudoku: Rules & How to Solve
Neighbouring digits on the green line must differ by at least 5. A deceptively tight constraint built around the 5.
The rule
Along a German whispers line, every pair of adjacent digits must differ by at least 5. So a 1 can only sit beside a 6, 7, 8, or 9, and a 4 only beside a 9.
How to solve german whispers sudoku
5 can't appear
No digit differs from 5 by 5 or more, so a 5 can never sit on a German whispers line — strike it from every line cell.
Low and high alternate
Because each step jumps by 5+, the line ping-pongs between the low group (1–4) and the high group (6–9).
Endpoints have options
An end cell only has one neighbour to satisfy, so it's less constrained than a middle cell that must clash with both sides.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a German whispers line?
- A line where consecutive cells must differ by at least 5, such as 1 next to 7.
- Can a 5 go on a German whispers line?
- No. Nothing differs from 5 by 5 or more, so 5 is impossible anywhere on the line.
- How is it different from Dutch whispers?
- Dutch whispers require a difference of at least 4; German whispers require at least 5, which forbids the 5 entirely.
